"California Coast Near Carmel" 1929, Etching and Watercolor.

Edition: Not stated, perhaps 100, numbered 94, lower left - possibly unique in this handcolored form. Signed and dated in pencil, Wm C. Ostrander  '29; lower right; edition number and title, 94  California Coast Near Carmel, lower left.

Image: 6 7/8 x 7 7/8 inches (174 x 200 mm). Sheet: 9 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches (241 x 266 mm).

Excellent condition. Narrow but adequate margins. Printed on parchment like buff wove paper. William Cheesbrough Ostrander spent a few years in California, roughly 1928 to 1932, during that time he made several fine etchings of California missions and landscapes (see Lone Cypress Point, Cal. below). This print has been beautifully handcolored by the artist.

"Desert Waste" 1929, Etching.

Edition: Not stated. Signed in pencil, lower right, William C. Ostrander; titled, lower left.

Image: 6 3/8 x 8 1/8 inches (162 x 206 mm). Sheet: 9 3/4 x 12 1/8 inches (247 x 307 mm).

Excellent condition. Good margins. Printed on parchment like buff wove paper. A few handling marks along the lower margin, covered by mat. Remnants of two pieces of old matting tape along verso upper margin. Although this particular impression is not dated, I have seen another clearly dated 1929.

Information obtained from the artist's grandson indicates that this print appears to be the product of a trip through Arizona, circa 1928. Ostrander and his wife evidently drove through Arizona on a trip from Massachusetts with intentions to resettle in California. Ostrander stayed in California for only a few years. With the onset of the Depression, and possible financial difficulties, he was forced to return East by steamer via the Panama Canal.
