"Hobart Mills" 1925, Etching.
Edition: 63. Signed in pencil, Roi Partridge, lower center; signed in the plate, lower left. The title and the edition size both derive from White (see below). Image: 4 7/8 x 5 13/16 inches (124 x 147 mm). Sheet: 6 9/16 x 8 inches (166 x 203 mm). Reference: White 1988:230 #159. Excellent condition. Good Margins. A fine impression on cream laid paper with partial watermark. White states in the catalogue raisonné that Partridge had noted that the image was "Drawn Christmas 1924." The etching was probably carried out the following year. Hobart Mills was a lumber mill located on Prosser Creek near Truckee, California. The lumber mill buildings may be seen center right in the etching. $400.00 |

"Katchina Doll"1926, Etching.
Book or gift plate associated with Imogen Cunningham and Roi Partridge. Edition: 150 (estimated). Signed in pencil, middle, Roi Partridge, immediately under the impression. Initialed "R. P." in the plate. Image: 3 3/4 x 2 15/16 inches (95 x 75 mm). Sheet: 4 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches (115 x 89 mm). Reference: White 1988:247 #168. Excellent condition. Margins, as issued. A fine impression on white wove paper, mounted, by the artist, onto a piece of 8 1/2" x 11" paper. It is my understanding that circa 1953 Partridge put together a portfolio of his graphic work for his son Padraic (Padraic was the son of Roi Partridge and his wife, photographer, Imogen Cunningham), and that this item was the opening page of that collection. Neither the print, the mounting paper, nor the glue are showing any evidence of degradation, toning, or discoloration. The print reads: "Now a Hopi Messenger with Greetings Comes From Imogen and Roi Partridge." The title of this print derives from the catalogue raisonné by White (1988:247). The word "katchina" is now a somewhat archaic spelling of the currently popular spelling "katsina." The doll depicts the Hopi Poli Katsina (Butterfly Katsina) with an exaggerated tabilta or headdress common to older dolls. It is probably safe to say that few, if any other, of these prints survive today. $650.00 |
