Pueblo Village circa 1940s, Watercolor. Edition: Unique. Signed, Red Robin, lower left. Dimensions of paper: 7 5/8 x 9 3/4 inches (193 x 272 mm). Not framed. Reference: Snodgrass 1968:156; Lester 1995:466. Very good condition overall. There is some slight discoloration to the paper just to the right of the mesa edge. Painted full sheet on light wove watercolor paper - highlighting and outlining with pencil. Red Robin is something of an enigma. His work is not extremely common, but common enough to be listed in reference books. There is some conflict as to his true tribal affiliation. Most references list him as affiliated with Zuni, while others have questioned if he was, or is, Native American at all. Snodgrass (1968:156) commented: The artist is known to have resided in Taos and Santa Fe, N.M., A current (2006) Smithsonian webpage on Native American arts has this to say about Red Robin (obviously borrowed, in part, from Snodgrass): Although little is known about Red Robin (unknown affiliation, probably Zuni), Lester (1995) provided no new information. Time will tell. SOLD |
