Artist: Leonard Pytlak (1910-1998)
|
"Union Square" circa 1935-1940, Lithograph. Edition: 6. Signed in pencil, Leonard Pytlak, lower right; monogrammed in the plate, lower left; titled and numbered, Union Square 1/6, lower left. Image: 6 1/4 x 9 7/8 inches (159 x 251 mm). Sheet: 8 3/4 x 12 5/8 inches (222 x 320 mm). Excellent condition. Good margins. Printed on white wove paper with the watermark "NAVARRE." Note the back of a sign in the lower right of the print, it reads, "Down With Hitler." As Hitler came to power leftists in America became more and more vocal about the problems that might stem from his form of government and the racist activities he was provoking. New York's Union Square was a popular location for protests and political rallies. The print may be documenting a May Day rally. In the upper right a movie camera is positioned to capture the event. The lithograph may have been produced while Pytlak was affiliated with New York City WPA graphics art projects (roughly 1934-1941). However I can find no evidence of that and the print lacks the NYC WPA stamp. An extremely rare image. $1,200.00 |
