"Washington Market - Early Morning" circa 1938, Etching. Edition: Not stated, but probably fewer than 25 printed. Signed, Max Mongel, lower right; titled, Washington Market - Early Morning, lower center; rubber stamped, Federal Art Project NYC WPA, lower left. Image: 8 7/8 x 11 3/4 inches (225 x 298 mm). Sheet: 10 1/4 x 12 9/16 inches (260 x 318 mm). Reference: Beall 2002:309. Excellent condition. Narrow but adequate margins. Printed on cream wove Rives watermarked paper. Very little information exists on this very good artist. Eleven WPA prints are on file at the Newark Museum, New Jersey, at least one can be found at the Queens Library, New York, and three of his etchings are in the collection of the Library of Congress (Beall 2002). All of the subjects are of New York scenes. Where did Max Mongel go? Where did he come from? Washington Market, in New York City, was one of the oldest established town markets in the country. When the World Trade Center was built the market area was demolished and moved to newer facilities in the Bronx. $650.00 |
