San Francisco Bay During War Time,
1944, Serigraph.
Edition: Not stated. Hand signed within the silkscreen image using black ink, Marion Cunningham, lower right. This print is undated, but another print (not in my possession) was dated 1944. Image: 9 x 13 inches (228 x 329 mm). Sheet: 11 x 14 3/4 inches (279 x 374 mm). Very good condition. Good margins. Printed on cream wove paper. A few handling marks around the margin, one fragment of old mating tape on each of the four corners. The signature and the railroad tracks in the foreground have been applied by the artist using a brush. An interesting print by this artist. Early in her career Marion Cunningham was a WPA artist, but eventually needed to resign because her husband, artist Ben Cunningham, was also in the project. Federal rules permitted only one member of a married couple to be on the project. A great World War Two dockside image of the bay looking west from San Francisco toward Yerba Buena and Treasure Islands with the Oakland Hills behind. The large building on Treasure Island is "Building One," the administrative epicenter for the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition. Lots of stuff going on here. SOLD |
