"Desert Ranch"  1953, Pencil and grease crayon.

Edition: Unique. Signed in pencil, Jack Van Ryder, lower left; date next to signature 1953; annotated, Sketch, beneath signature.

Dimensions of sheet: 12 3/4 x 11 inches (323 x 279 mm).

A few handling marks, otherwise in excellent condition. Pencil and black crayon drawing on cream wove paper. Jack Van Ryder made a number of these sketches in the 1950s with the intention of producing offset prints. From letters that he left behind, it appears that following printing he would have the original photo negative destroyed. He would then sign and number the offset prints (generally done in editions of one hundred). The use of the high contrasting black and white media meant that an offset print could be made without using a halftone screen. Consequently no telltale halftone dots in the prints.

"Stairway at Chimopovi - Arizona"  circa 1950-1955, Pencil drawing.

The use of the spelling Chimopovi is a somewhat archaic form for the now more commonly accepted spelling of Shungopavi (or Shungopovi). Shungopavi is a Hopi village located on the western tip of Second Mesa. The drawing depicts the top of a kiva ladder on the left, with a stairway rising to a section of the village, on the right.
