"The Butcher, the Baker, the Candlestick Maker" 1939, Mixed Media. Edition: Unique. Signed and dated, Harry Gottlieb 39, lower right, also signed in pencil on the reverse; titled, The Butcher, the Baker, the Candlestick Maker, on the reverse. Dimensions of paper: 9 5/8 x 12 5/8 inches (244 x 320 mm). Excellent condition. Executed full sheet on heavy wove paper. Slight paper skinning to the back of the sheet. The artist had tacked the sheet down to a backing sheet with four small drops of glue (one in each corner), upon separation, skinning occurred - very minor. The media employed is pen and ink wash with white paint accents and brush spatter. Stated on the reverse, in pencil, is "Stone for actual size of sketch." I am not familiar with a lithograph by Gottlieb with this image, however the notation seems to refer to one. The artist appears to have changed the title of this piece three times. The first, titled on the back, is the word Bargains, at some point that was crossed out and the title stated above, The Butcher, the Baker, the Candlestick Maker, was added. On the old backing sheet, The Butcher, the Baker.... title has been erased and changed to Public Relations Conference. Take your pick. The backing sheet was made from recycled advertising brochures for a Youth Festival Committee benefit stating that the "Proceeds will send young civil rights workers, musicians, and artists to Algiers for the 1965 World Festival of Youth." The old backing sheet has additional penciled notations and will transfer with the art work. $1750.00 |
