Artist: Orlo M. Gill (1895-1953)
|
"The Sentinel" 1931, Etching. Edition: Not stated, but probably very small. Signed in pencil, Orlo Gill, lower right; titled, The Sentinel, lower left; dated and signed in the plate, O. M. Gill 1931, lower right. Image: 8 9/16 x 5 7/8 inches (217 x 149 mm). Sheet: 11 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches (285 x 234 mm). Excellent condition. Good margins. Printed on gray laid paper - probably a partial sheet of charcoal drawing paper. Information on Gill is not bountiful, however he is mentioned in a Cass City, Michigan, newspaper dated January 24, 1936. He is referenced as teaching art extension courses and is referred to as Professor Gill. In a 1939 he was made the head of the "Fine Arts Department," at Eastern Michigan University (then Michigan State Normal College), in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The depiction of the saguaro, and its association with the Lower Sonoran Desert, seems to indicate that Gill had visited Arizona by at least 1931. $450.00 |
