"Evening - Paradise Valley - Arizona" circa 1925, Drypoint.

Edition: Not stated, but probably between 100 and 200. Signed in pencil, George Elbert Burr, lower left, and monogrammed, GB, in the lower right corner of the plate. Titled, Evening - Paradise Valley - Arizona, lower right.

Image: 7 13/16 x 9 15/16 inches (199 x 253 mm). Sheet: 10 1/8 x 13 1/4 inches (256 x 293 mm).

References: Crafton 1930 #282; Mitchell 1990:16 #2; Seeber 1971:138 #282.

Excellent condition. Good margins. Printed on off-white laid paper. Two small pieces of archival matting tape along the upper back margin, well away from image. In 1971, Seeber commented on this image, as follows: "Paradise Valley, near Phoenix and just beyond Camelback Mountain, has now lost something of its pristine charm." Enough said. A beautiful desert print by one of America's great artist's.

"Fish Creek, Apache Trail, Arizona" 1926, Etching and Aquatint.

Edition: Not stated, but probably less than 25. Signed in pencil, George Elbert Burr, lower left, monogrammed, GB, in the lower right corner of the plate.

Image: 4 1/16 x 6 3/4 inches (103 x 171 mm). Sheet: 6 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches (165 x 241 mm).

References: Crafton 1930 #264; Seeber 1971:104, 135 #264.

Excellent condition. Good margins. Printed on off-white laid paper. Two small stains from old matting tape along the reverse upper top margin, well away from image. Very slight toning from previous mat, current mat covers this problem, does not warrant cleaning. In 1971 Seeber commented on this image (1971:104, 135 and Figure 40), attempting to make the argument based on a trial print in her possession that a remarque of a female profile in the left margin of the trial proof is imitated in the craggy canyon wall, upper right. Personally, I think that's pushing the bubble of probability. Fish Creek itself, is located due east of Phoenix, Arizona, and flows through the center of the Superstition Mountains in a northwesterly direction toward the Salt River.

This moonlit night version, represented by the use of both etching and aquatint, is rare. The print that is described in Crafton (1930), is the etched "sunlit" state. No comment upon an etched and aquatint image is made. Seeber (1971:135) does make mention of this print and state, and held a copy of it in her file, however, that print was neither signed nor titled. Of the "etching only" state, in Seeber's possession, it was dated in Burr's handwriting as 12/25/26.

A rare print.

"Snow Storm, Estes Park" circa 1920s, Etching.

Edition: Not stated, but probably between 100 and 200. Signed in pencil, George Elbert Burr, lower left; monogrammed, GB, in the lower left corner of plate. As stated in Seeber, there is a partially obliterated second monogram in the lower right corner of plate. Titled, Snow Storm, Estes Park, at the bottom of sheet.

Image: 5 7/8 x 6 7/8 inches (149 x 174 mm). Sheet: 8 5/8 x 10 3/4 inches (218 x 273 mm).

References: Crafton 1930 #178; Seeber 1971:122 #178.

Excellent condition. Good margins. A fine impression on buff wove paper. Very slight mat toning from previous framing, does not warrant cleaning. Seeber lists two alternative titles, Estes Park, Snow Storm and Snowstorm, Estes. It appears that a bit of black ink was mixed into blue ink giving the print a deeper and slightly warmer presence. Seeber notes that sandpaper was used to roughen the plate background. Crafton (1930) refers to this use of sandpaper as "Sand Tint."
