"901"
circa
1938, Lithograph.
Edition: Small, probably less than 25. Signed in pencil, Redman Dorgeloh, lower right; titled, 901, lower left. Image: 8 1/2 x 13 1/8 inches (216 x 333 mm). Sheet: 11 5/8 x 15 inches (320 x 381 mm). References: Hughes 2002:1:318; Seaton 2005:54-62. Excellent condition. Good margins. San Francisco WPA FAP print. A fine impression on white wove BFK Rives paper. Two alternate titles are known, 901 Potrero Avenue and Arts Project Building, San Francisco. As indicated by the titles, 901 Potrero Avenue was, for awhile, the location of the San Francisco WPA arts projects. It was also the home the FAP graphic arts program under the direction of Raymond Bertrand (from 1935-1939). The building stood on the west side of Potrero Avenue where 21st Street intersects. The building is now gone, incorporated at sometime into San Francisco General Hospital. Marguerite Redman Dorgeloh, or Redman, as she preferred to be called, is reputed to have made some 50 prints for the Federal Arts Project between 1936 and 1940 (Seaton 2006:54). A sad coda to her life was her suicide in 1944. A great print of a historically important WPA arts facility. $650.00 |
