"Spring Morning" 1964, Pen and Ink Drawing. Edition: Unique. Signed and dated, Dasburg '64, lower right. Dimensions of paper: 17 1/2 x 22 1/2 inches (438 x 571 mm). Not framed, archivally matted. Reference: Coke 1966. Excellent condition. Drawn nearly full sheet on off white wove paper, watermarked JAPAN. Very slight toning to sheet margin from previous framing, current mat covers this problem. Provenience transfers with the drawing. In 1966, as Taos, New Mexico, artist Andrew Dasburg continued to experiment with the use of speed and line on paper, Van Deren Coke and the staff of the University Art Museum, University of New Mexico, organized a traveling exhibit of Dasburg drawings. Concurrent with the exhibit was the catalogue The Drawings of Andrew Dasburg (Coke 1966). Coke writes a good overarching introduction to this exhibit and explains Dasburg's pen and ink drawings, such as Spring Morning: In the past two years his outlines have become freer without the loss of feeling of solidity in his shapes. He now models more thin, active strokes that are whisked across the paper to describe a series of canted rooflines or to define the slopes of a hill. Welded together by a combination of clustered lines are the immediate foreground and distant clouds, so that the total arrangement is tilted up and flattened, a procedure often used by Cezanne. He carefully avoids recessional lines and adjusts his compositions so that a viewer cannot predict what will be found as he traces a retreating ink stroke or confluence of lines.
