"Barnyard" 1932, Lithograph.

Edition: Not stated - assumed 10, see below. Signed in pencil, lower right, "J. E. Costigan N. A.;" monogrammed "J E C" in the plate, lower right; titled, lower left.

Image: 12 3/16 x 14 1/4 inches (309 x 361 mm). Sheet: 13 1/2 x 15 1/4 inches (342 x 387 mm).

Reference: Costigan 2000.

Excellent condition. Narrow margins, probably as issued. Printed on off-white wove paper. Remnants of matting tape, upper left, center, and right, but away from the image. Assumed to be printed while the artist was working for the Federal Art Project. Statements of edition size vary from 10 to 25 printed. However, a catalogue of some of this artist's graphic works, prepared by Daniel Costigan, states explicitly that, "Ten prints of this work were specially produced for the Federal (WPA) Arts Project of the 1930s" (Costigan 2000:32).

"Jackie" 1939, Etching and Drypoint.

Edition: 250. Signed in pencil, lower right, "J. E. Costigan N. A.;" titled, "Jackie," lower left.

Image: 10 7/8 x 8 15/16 inches (275 x 227 mm). Sheet: 15 7/16 x 11 7/8 inches (392 x 301 mm).

Reference: Craven 1939: Plate 28; Costigan 2000.

Excellent condition. Generous margins. Printed on off-white wove paper. Remnants of matting tape, upper left and right, well away from the image. Very slight toning from previous mat, does not warrant cleaning. Illustrated in Thomas Cravens, A Treasury of American Prints.  Of this print, Craven wrote, "Costigan, with his intensely sincere approach to home subject matter, is the ideal man to deal with the "barefoot boy, with cheek of tan." Jackie is a study of the artist’s small son. The subject wears an immense straw hat, reminding us that the Costigans are practical farmers, and that Jackie probably sat for his father after helping out with a good day’s haying." Daniel Costigan (2000) states that this print was created in 1931 and was twice printed. The first time in 1931, and in an edition of 90. The second printing, in 1939, published by Associated American Artists, was in their usual edition of 250. We are assuming that this print is from the second 1939 edition.
