"Zabriskie Point, Death Valley" circa 1934, Color Woodcut.

Edition: Not stated, probably less than 100. Signed minutely in pencil, Andrew G. Aldrin, lower right. Monogrammed in the block, lower right. Title derived from a comparable example.

Image: 12 1/16 x 15 inches (305 x 381 mm). Sheet: 13 1/16 x 16 3/8 inches (331 x 416 mm).

Reference: Wilson 1988:307.

Very good condition. Narrow margins, as issued. Printed on off-white Japan laid paper. Newark Museum (Aldrin) #5. Slight remnants of old matting tape in the upper left and right corners. Small spot of ink offsetting in the upper left sky. Aldrin constantly experimented with the use of different colors and while printing this image continually changed the palette as he proceeded, almost in the manner of a monoprint. Out of the possible 100 printed images there was a wide variety of color change and artist choice, making each print somewhat unique.

Born in Sweden in 1889, Anders Aldrin immigrated to the United States in 1911. Probably as an attempt at assimilation he has signed the print Andrew and not Anders. At a later date he reverted to his given name. Anders Aldrin exhibited this image at the Fifteenth Annual Print Makers Exhibition, Los Angeles Museum, Exposition Park, in March of 1934, under the title Zabriskie Canyon (see Wilson 1988). A WPA affiliation has been suggested for this print, however it's exhibition in 1934, a date prior to the WPA, makes that assumption questionable. Perhaps it was through the Public Works of Art Project (PWAP)?

Aldrin began working with woodblocks in 1928 while studying with the well-known artist and instructor Frank Morley Fletcher, however his interest in the process seems to have waned, and by 1938 there is no evidence of him continuing the process.
